How I lost a pound and 12″ of Hair

Oh lovely hair, oh lovely hair….you must go elsewhere to live (sung to the tune Oh Tennenbaum, in case you weren’t feelin’ it).  This is my pic before I decided to cut off and donate 12″ of my hair.  I’d been growing it out for 2 years and have always wanted to donate it, but never quite made it to that mark.  Well, have 2 kids to chase around and time flies by and you wear your hair in a ponytail everyday, so why bother spending $$ on getting it cut/styled anyway?!  Thus, I finally got to the point of it being too long and must have something done.  I thought I’d only have 8″, but when the hairdresser said 12″…I didn’t hesitate one bit.  I believe my exact words were “Chop it off.”  I was ready.  Although, I’ve been known to cry at haircuts and get sad and depressed because my protective shield hair is gone.  This time, I stood strong and felt really good about helping out a cancer patient in need.

This is the after, with my cute little man :-)  It was a bit short for me at first, but my hair grows like a weed, so I knew it would only be about a month and I’d like it much better.

And here we have a pic about a month later (insert awkward phone pic taken by self).

I decided to donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.  I really liked what they had to say and who they helped.  ‘The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong,* beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.’ – from their website (here).  I think many women have a hard time with constructing a positive self image and those with cancer are facing much more than that.  I would like to feel that I helped one of those women feel more comfortable in her skin and give her something that she is unable to have and that most of us take for granted.

Here is my official letter that my donation was received and will be made into a wig, along with 6-8 other ponytails, for a cancer patient in need.  It really brought a smile to my face and heart just knowing that I was able to help someone in this way.  If you are able to, I’d highly encourage you to consider hair donation.  For more information about the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program, visit their website at http://www.pantene.com/en-US/PanteneBeautifulLengths/Details/beautiful-lengths-about-the-program.aspx.
