Creepy Crawly Critters…I Cringe

We’ve lived in Arizona for over 7 years and I have only seen 2 scorpions and 3 cockroaches in that entire time…until last week when we moved further into the desert.

Camel Spider

The hubby stepped out onto the patio and felt something swipe the tip of his head and then fall to the ground.  It was this disgusting little creature…a.k.a. camel spider.  He was pretty quick to get away and actually made it inside the patio door, which was alright with me because it was much easier for the hubby to step on and kill the gross little thing. Seriously thankful he was here to take care of the matter…I might have died.

Night #2 in the new house provided this scary and nasty spider…yup, it’s a black widow. The hubby was out in the garage and noticed a “unique” web in the corner and low and behold a spider with a red hour glass.  I cringe.  He killed this one too.  Again, so glad he was here to take care of it.  He’s my hero :)

Tarantula

On to night #3 and the hubby decides to go out and “hunt” scorpions and spray them to get rid of them.  Low and behold, he comes across this furry beast…a tarantula.  I am seriously wondering if we should flee this place now???  I am inside the house, getting the kids ready for bed, when I hear a scream from outside.  I open the front door and there stands the hubby basically frozen with a flashlight pointed at the ground.  He tells me he sees a tarantula and I am in disbelief.  Unsure of how to get rid of this absolutely horrendous thing, I actually went to bed and let the hubby figure this one out (don’t judge, you would too).  The next morning he tells me it crawled up to the yard light (which is about 16 feet directly above your head) and began to eat bugs.  He read online that tarantulas are not deadly, but more like a bee sting.  Hmmm, I don’t want to find out.  Ironically, I bought a can of spider spray earlier that day, which shoots up to 29 feet.  He began to spray like a madman.  The tarantula then crippled up and fell to its death…and splatted (yes, splatted…guts and all) directly on my welcome mat…lovely.

Mouse

We then had 2 nights where we (by we, I mean the hubby) saw nothing.  Score!?  He then went out on Tuesday night and came across this furry little animal…a field mouse?, a pack rat?  Lord knows.  Awe, cute…not.  Kill it.  Seriously, just kill it.

Scorpion

In case you were wondering what a scorpion looks like under a UV light, this is it.  He killed 5 of these in one night.  All in our backyard.  Oy vey.  I really hope it gets better.  It has to, right?!

This is all new territory for us and let me tell you, I’m freaked out!  I seriously don’t know what I would do if I encountered any of these if I were by myself or with the kids.  I really hope and pray I don’t have to either.  I know…wishful thinking.  However, most of these lovely disgusting creatures only come out at night.  As long as they stay outside, I’m ok with it.  The kids and I never go out past dark, but I do worry they will get bit by something if it gets inside the house.  My little man is so adventurous and he loves to bring me the “treasures” he finds…especially bugs.  Let’s hope these little “adventures” end for us soon…I’d like to focus on other things for this little blog of mine ;-)

I’ve been MIA…

It’s 9pm on a Sunday night and both kids are in bed.  Jesse is installing the new dryer and I sit here in peace and quiet with only the cat purring.  Somehow, I think the Lord knew I needed this time to myself.  There’s been a lot going on around here lately and I’m surprised I haven’t lost it yet.  Let me tell you, I’m Type A (crave organization, order, function) and I haven’t had that in quite some time.  I try to get so much done as fast as I can, only my body tells me otherwise.  I think it’s telling me, “Hey you?!  Remember, you’re preggo and need to slow down a bit.”  I like to be busy and constantly doing something. But lately, my feet, back, belly…well, they all ache.  So, for now I sit.  It’s not a bad thing.  I need to learn to relax and take it easy.  I know it’s good for me and will make me stop losing my mind so much.  Once upon a time, I tried yoga.  Yaaaaaah, that is so slow and boring for me.  I just couldn’t handle it.  I tried several times and mostly just fell asleep.  Maybe it was the wrong kind of yoga.  I want to like it, but I just get too antsy.  I’m a runner at heart :)

We moved into our new house last week.  Talk about a whirlwind of stuff going on.  The hubby and I did it all by ourselves, with 2 kids and 1 unborn child in tow.  We did hire 3 guys to help us load/unload the truck, but that was it.  Talk about crazyville around here. There are boxes and furniture everywhere.  We ate fast food for 2 days straight and I don’t care if I see another sandwich or burger for quite a while.  We never eat out and my body was screaming at me for putting such stuff into it.  The kids, on the other hand, well…they loved themselves some cheeseburgers.  It was like a big ol’ treat for them.  Hope you enjoyed it kids…last time for a long time ;-)

There may or may not have been a moment where mama lost it because she couldn’t find a frying pan (or any other dishes for that matter) to make eggs and chorizo for breakfast.  You don’t want to mess with me when I’m hungry.  I get hangry.  Just ask the hubby.  It ain’t pretty.  (NOTE:  I have since apologized for my unruly manner.  It was about 5 minutes after I settled for cereal and toast.)  We have since found all of the dishes and the kitchen is completely unpacked.  Thank the Lord!  (Now to find the box with my clothes…hmmmm.)

I already find stuff that I love about the house and things I want to change.  Our previous house was all updated and decorated to how we like and I miss a lot of those things.  I know it will take time for me to make this new home ours and I can’t wait to get a paint brush in my hands and make that happen.  BUT, first I need to focus on Baby #3.  I’m sure my focus will completely change when he/she comes along.  My guess is that I’ll be wanting sleep more than anything.  Or maybe a shower?  I remember how it was with the first child.  The second child was much easier.  Can’t wait to see how the third will be.  Love me that new baby smell too.  Less than 8 weeks until he/she arrives.  Does anyone else find that time flies way too quickly as they get older???

(Sorry for the lack of pics.  I have a camera, but no way to load the pics.  Must find that box.)

How I lost a pound and 12″ of Hair

Oh lovely hair, oh lovely hair….you must go elsewhere to live (sung to the tune Oh Tennenbaum, in case you weren’t feelin’ it).  This is my pic before I decided to cut off and donate 12″ of my hair.  I’d been growing it out for 2 years and have always wanted to donate it, but never quite made it to that mark.  Well, have 2 kids to chase around and time flies by and you wear your hair in a ponytail everyday, so why bother spending $$ on getting it cut/styled anyway?!  Thus, I finally got to the point of it being too long and must have something done.  I thought I’d only have 8″, but when the hairdresser said 12″…I didn’t hesitate one bit.  I believe my exact words were “Chop it off.”  I was ready.  Although, I’ve been known to cry at haircuts and get sad and depressed because my protective shield hair is gone.  This time, I stood strong and felt really good about helping out a cancer patient in need.

This is the after, with my cute little man :-)  It was a bit short for me at first, but my hair grows like a weed, so I knew it would only be about a month and I’d like it much better.

And here we have a pic about a month later (insert awkward phone pic taken by self).

I decided to donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.  I really liked what they had to say and who they helped.  ‘The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong,* beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.’ – from their website (here).  I think many women have a hard time with constructing a positive self image and those with cancer are facing much more than that.  I would like to feel that I helped one of those women feel more comfortable in her skin and give her something that she is unable to have and that most of us take for granted.

Here is my official letter that my donation was received and will be made into a wig, along with 6-8 other ponytails, for a cancer patient in need.  It really brought a smile to my face and heart just knowing that I was able to help someone in this way.  If you are able to, I’d highly encourage you to consider hair donation.  For more information about the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program, visit their website at http://www.pantene.com/en-US/PanteneBeautifulLengths/Details/beautiful-lengths-about-the-program.aspx.
